A trade apprenticeship is how you gain the knowledge and skills you need for a career in your trade. Most apprenticeships take about four years to complete. You’ll spend approximately six to eight weeks per year in the classroom or shop learning from an instructor. The rest of the year, you’ll earn while you learn, working on a job site alongside experienced tradespeople and getting paid to do it.

Canadian apprentices and employers often face barriers that prevent them from maximizing the benefits of apprenticeship training. One of the biggest barriers is limited interprovincial mobility for apprentices, which partly results from differences in apprenticeship regulations among Canada’s 13 provinces and territories. The four Atlantic provinces are working to ease apprenticeship mobility restrictions through the Atlantic Apprenticeship Harmonization Project (AAHP). The AAHP seeks to harmonize requirements and standards for 10 trades in the Atlantic provinces within the next three years. The three greatest keys to the AAHP’s success have been the commitment of government leaders, the sustained buy-in and active engagement of stakeholders, and sustained operational funding.

Outdated provincial regulations are needlessly limiting the number of apprenticeship opportunities available to trades workers, Provinces regulate whether workers must complete a certified apprenticeship to legally work in an occupation, the length of apprenticeship terms, and the rate at which firms may hire apprentices relative to the number of certified workers they employ, known as a journey person-apprentice ratio. Governments have set these regulations in order to protect workers and the general public by encouraging workers to gain the proper training in skilled trades. However, entry restrictions are not the best means by which to regulate the quality and safety of work, say the authors. Instead of regulating the rate of apprentice entry, governments should focus on regulating quality of work and safety standards.

When a trade is designated as a Red Seal Trade, candidates in the trade who meet all eligibility requirements in a given jurisdiction may apply to write the Interprovincial Red Seal examination. If successful, they receive that jurisdiction’s journey person certificate with a Red Seal endorsement affixed.
