Searchable Directory of More than 65 Open Universities Worldwide

Throughout the world, more than 65 open universities provide open and equal access to education. Students do not require any formal academic qualifications or credentials in order to be admitted. The 10 largest open universities worldwide have a combined enrolment exceeding 16.5 million students, with the largest numbers in Asia followed by Africa and Europe. Open universities currently use a range of pedagogical approaches and delivery modes ranging from print, to radio and television, online learning and blended learning or combinations of these delivery forms.

France. One Portal Featuring More than 34,000 Open Educational Resources Developed by Universities in France

Since 2004, the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research has supported the development of eight Digital Thematic Universities (Universités Numériques Thématiques – UNT) and one unique web-TV portal, Canal-U, with the goals of:
– Improving the results of undergraduate students;
– Publishing re-usable Open Educational Resources (OERs) created by professors and researchers from partner institutions. All of the OERs are quality assessed in terms of content, pedagogy, and technology; and
– Promoting French higher education in all the domains represented by the eight UNTs.

How Open and Free Content will Transform Post-secondary Education

If current trends continue, we may well see the day quite soon when most, if not all, digital ‘content’ will be open and free to use for educational purposes. Open educational resources (OER) are learning and teaching materials, freely available online for anyone to use. Examples include full courses, course modules, lectures, games, teaching materials and assignments. They can take the form of text, images, audio, video and may even be interactive.
