After receiving her certificate, Ngọc Giàu shared her reactions As an educator, I have acknowledged that we, as a post-secondary institution, need to train employees for the community. However it’s getting more difficult to keep up with the demands of the employers as they often complain that our graduates are incapable of capturing what it takes to do their job to the best of their ability. There are so much material for our teacher to cover that we are often confused on what should be included in our curriculum.
Before I was introduced to the DACUM model, I didn’t identify it clearly. I didn’t know which question to ask, how to collect the information, and I wondered how I could be a facilitator. Luckily, our trainer told me I didn’t need to be a subject matter expert when conducting a DACUM analysis. Instead, I was instructed to perfect my skills as a facilitator. I realized that DACUM is more than a competency-based analysis but a way of identifying and developing curriculum, guiding and managing learners, and tracking their progress while in training and on-the-job. During the training, I learned how to conduct a DACUM analysis process successfully. then conducted three DACUM sessions in my institution. The experience was invaluable and it helped us to write two new curriculum for the faculties of Food Technology and Veterinary Technicians. Each curriculum focuses on the duties and tasks that a future graduate may need to work well in an organization.
The more I was exposed to DACUM exercises, the better I could understand and see and utilize the skills of a DACUM facilitator. I believe that being a DACUM facilitator is a wonderful part of my career, though I am aware that I still have to learn much more to improve my role in the future.
