Trends in Registered Apprenticeship Training in Canada, 1991 to 2009 Following an extended period of slow growth during the recession of the 1990s, the number of both newly-registered apprentices and completers of apprenticeship programs in the four largest trade groups entered a strong growth phase beginning in the late 1990s. However, between 2008 and 2009 the number of completions continued its upward trend, whereas the number of newly-registered apprentices decreased sharply.
